This document defines fuelling protocols which ensure safe, fast and consistent filling of gaseous hydrogen storage fuel cell electric road vehicles, such as cars, buses and trucks. The aim is to harmonize global practices, ensure interoperability and promote user safety and infrastructure compatibility.
This document provides requirements for and guidance on the following elements of a fuelling protocol:
Allowable Hydrogen Service Levels consistent with nozzle and receptacle interface specifications. Fuelling parameters governing fuelling speed and target criteria. Process Limits on pressure, temperature and mass flow. Requirements for communication between vehicle and dispenser enabling improved fill quality. Fallback Mechanisms in case of communication failure. Normative Fuelling Protocols, where key assumptions carefully consider universal fuelling parameters for a broad range of vehicles. Informative Fuelling Protocols, where more information through advanced communication between vehicle and dispenser may enable faster fuelling and additional safety.
While this document is primarily targeted for fuel cell electric road vehicles, it may also be used for other applications such as the following (provided that the vehicle fuel system conforms to UN GTR #13, UNR134 and standards for land vehicles, ISO 19881 and ISO 19887-1):
Gaseous hydrogen electric train, marine and aviation applications. Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine applications. Special applications such as mobile energy supply systems, construction machinery, agricultural equipment and mobile fueling stations.[23]
This document is not applicable to:
Dispensing to applications designed for cryo-compressed, liquid or metal-hydride storage of hydrogen.
