Scope

This PAS specifies requirements for enteric methane suppressing feed materials and feed additives or products derived thereof fed orally to dairy cows and beef cattle.

It specifies requirements for assessing and quantifying the efficacy of the methane suppressing effect of feed materials and feed additives or products derived thereof designed for dairy cows and/or beef cattle at 6 months or older, as well as requirements regarding associated information.

This PAS covers methane suppressing feed materials and feed additives or products derived thereof, formulated to be used alone or in combination as a single product, in various farming systems, feeding methods, and finishing systems. It covers products used with feeds fed orally under defined conditions. It establishes a consistent technical basis for evaluating evidence from in vivo farm trials, including minimum requirements for trial design, test methods, independence of evidence, statistical treatment, and documentation.

This PAS only covers feed materials and feed additives or products derived thereof that follow their intended use and have been established for use as feed for the intended animal.

This PAS is intended for use by those placing feed materials and feed additives or products derived thereof on the market. It might be of interest to assurance and certification bodies, regulators, and other stakeholders seeking a transparent and verifiable demonstration of methane‑suppressing product performance.

It does not cover:

•           feed products specifically intended for other ruminant or non-ruminant animals;

•           lifecycle assessment of the product’s creation (e.g. research and development, material sourcing, production of the product and end of life disposal/waste products such as slurry);

•           the production of other greenhouse gas emissions or other types of gas;

•           other methane mitigation methods, such as genetic selection, environmental manipulations, forage-feed ratio manipulation or pasture management;

•           wider emission reducing activities within farm operations or along the feed material or feed additive supply chain; and

•           product information and marking.
