This document specifies the design, materials, quality of manufacture, test and designation of electrical trace heating for anti-icing ventilation inlets and outlets onboard vessels sailing in low temperature environments (below10 °C).
Anti-icing ventilation inlets and outlets using electrical trace heating are essential and widely used equipment for ventilation in low-temperature climate during ship navigation. They are currently configured on both conventional and polar ships in various countries(America, China, South Korea, Japan and Europe etc.). They normally include two types: louvers installed on the wall and mushroom ventilator installed on the deck. Anti-icing technical requirements for ships that frequently navigate in low-temperature climate differ from those operate in normal regions. Factors such as ice, wind, rain, snow, and fog can cause blockages in the main ventilation inlets and outlets, affecting ship’s navigation and personnel safety. Therefore, as the main air inlets and outlets for the HVAC systems of important space on the ship, Anti-icing louvers and mushroom ventilators with electric trace heating are crucial for ensuring the safety of the ship’s navigation in low-temperature climate. The current standards for some ventilation inlets and outlets are unable to cope with potential severe weather conditions, which can result in the freezing of important ventilation inlets and outlets on the shipsfurtherly damages the navigation safety. So there must be a unified standard to ensure their effective operation.
