Scope

This document specifies supporting methods for evaluating qualitative characteristics of protective patina formed on weathering steel structures. The methods include patina thickness measurement, rust sample analysis, section-loss measurement by ultrasonic testing, pit-depth measurement and electrochemical evaluation.

Purpose

When rust appearance alone does not provide sufficient evidence for classification or maintenance decisions, additional characterization is required. Existing practice uses several destructive and nondestructive measurements, but the selection, execution and reporting of these methods are not harmonized for weathering steel structures. This project provides supporting evaluation methods for detailed investigation and improves comparability of results.
