Scope

This document specifies an inspection method for classifying the appearance of rust formed on unpainted weathering steel structures into five levels. It covers visual observation, lighting and photographic recording, a supplementary tape peel test, judgment by evaluators, and the minimum contents of the inspection report.

Purpose

Consistent field inspection requires common observation conditions, records and judgment rules. Rust grain size, peeling condition and surface undulation can be interpreted differently if lighting, photography and supplementary checks are not standardized. This project provides a practical inspection procedure that supports reproducible classification and maintenance decisions for weathering steel structures.
