Scope
This document specifies principles and a five-level classification for evaluating the corrosion condition of structural parts made of unpainted weathering steel from the appearance of rust. It provides criteria to support routine inspection and decisions on continued observation, further investigation, repair or reinforcement.
Purpose
Weathering steel is widely used without painting in bridges and other structures. Its corrosion condition varies locally with rainfall exposure, orientation, humidity, airborne chloride and sulphate, and other microclimatic factors. A harmonized visual classification is needed so that owners, inspectors and engineers can describe rust appearance consistently and select appropriate follow-up actions. This project establishes the overall principle and five-level classification forming the basis of the three-part series.
