This British Standard provides a methodology and a structured approach to undertaking a fire risk assessment (FRA), for use by competent persons with knowledge of the principles of fire safety. The methodology can be applied to construction sites falling within the scope of the standard, regardless of whether or not an FRA is required by legislation.
This British Standard gives recommendations and corresponding examples of documentation for undertaking, and recording the findings of, fire risk assessments (FRAs) in housing premises and parts of housing premises.
This British Standard is applicable to:
a) construction sites, during the construction of the built asset.
This British Standard is not applicable to:
a) completed built assets, whether occupied or not. The methodology in this British Standard is intended to determine the preventive and protective measures that are necessary to protect workers/visitors of construction sites and people in the immediate vicinity of the site. The methodology is not intended to address the safety of firefighters in the event of a fire on the premises. It is not intended to address protection of property (the premises and their contents) or the environment, or protection of a business against interruption.
There is currently no dedicated British Standard providing a methodology for carrying out fire risk assessments on construction sites. Existing fire risk assessment standards focus on occupied buildings and do not fully address temporary works, changing site conditions, hot works, temporary accommodation, construction sequencing, fuels, batteries or transitional risks. BS 9793 would establish a consistent methodology for assessing and managing construction fire risk throughout the project lifecycle.
