Scope

Under SPSC, is responsible for the development and maintenance of standards relating to fire safety of construction sites.

Purpose

There is currently no dedicated British Standard addressing construction fire risk assessment throughout both the design and construction phases. Existing fire risk assessment guidance is largely focused on occupied premises and does not adequately address temporary conditions, changing risks, construction activities, interfaces with design teams or dynamic site environments. The standard would provide a consistent methodology and improve the quality and consistency of fire risk assessments undertaken on construction projects.

Themes and topics

Design-stage fire risk assessment, construction-phase fire risk assessment, assessor competence, dynamic and task-based assessments, temporary conditions, change management, residual risk information, review processes and integration with wider construction fire safety governance. The standard forms part of the wider BS 9989 series and interfaces with governance, competence and specialist construction fire safety guidance.
