This document specifies the test methods for evaluating external leakage rates of valve stem seals and valve body sealing joints of marine cryogenic valves under cryogenic test environments of -196 °C and below. This document is applicable to fugitive emission tests adopting external cooling or internal cooling methods.
Leakage of liquefied natural gas(LNG) or liquefied hydrogen(LH2) from valves to an enclosed compartment on a ship presents a significant hazard to the crew and the ship itself. Traditional cryogenic tests of valve leakage have encountered significant challenges, primarily due to extremely low temperatures affecting the accuracy of the test equipment and the condition of the test fluids. Therefore, a practical and efficient standard is needed for testing valve external leakage (fugitive emissions) in a cryogenic environment. This standard specifies the fugitive emission test methods for marine cryogenic valves under low-temperature test conditions, covering the corresponding test equipment, test procedures, detection methods, and approaches to eliminate environmental interference. These tests will help reduce the risks associated with the use of flammable cryogenic fuels, helping to ensure the safety of ships and personnel.
