Scope

This Part 102 of IEC/IEEE 62209 series specifies requirements for instrumentation used for the measurement of specific absorption rate (SAR) in accordance with Part 101.

This document specifies:

a. performance requirements for SAR measuring instrumentation, including electric field probes, scanning systems, and associated measurement equipment,

b. requirements for phantoms and tissue-simulating materials used for SAR measurements,

c. requirements for calibration of probes and measuring systems,

d. performance characteristics and verification methods for measuring system components,

e. requirements for traceability of calibration and measurement parameters,

f. requirements for validation of the instrumentation in accordance with Part 103,

g. methods for estimation of SAR measuring system uncertainty.

The applicable frequency range is from 4 MHz to 10 GHz.

This document does not specify SAR measurement procedures, which are provided in Part 101. Validation of SAR measuring systems using reference sources and defined validation procedures is specified in Part 103. Informative technical background and guidance related to instrumentation and calibration are provided in Technical Report 104.

Purpose

At the extraordinary TC106 Plenary in Kista, Sweden on 2024-05-29, TC106 decided to restructure IEC/IEEE 62209-1528 and IEC 62209-3 into a new series of standards as proposed in 106/642/DC. Numbering, titles, scopes and updated outlines were discussed 106/737/DC. The positive feedback on 106/737/DC was taken into this NP. Further suggestions can still be discussed by submitting comments on this NP.
