This international standard specifies a method for the determination of the content of non-volatile per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by solvent extraction and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry in footwear and footwear components. This international standard is applicable to all types of footwear materials to which it is given on ISO/TR 16178:2021, table 1.
In POP and REACh annex 17 entries 53, PFOS, 68 PFOA, per and polyfluoroalkyl substances are regulated to several level due to its potential effect on user heath (carcinogenic bioccumulative effect in the environment).Therefore, this international standard intends to establish a test method to determine the content of non-volatile per and polyfluoroalkyl substances in footwear. For producers and retailers, this standard will help them have knowledge about the safety of their products; for the third-party test organization, this standard could help them have a unified test method and a comparable test result among organizations; for customers, the data of test results could help them make assessment of the safety issues.
