Scope

This document specifies a test method for measuring the lead, iron and manganese content in gasoline by Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry(EDXRF).

This document applies to the determination of the lead, iron and manganese content ranging from 2.0 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg

Purpose

Alkyl additives composed of lead, iron or manganese may be added into gasoline to improve the antiknock properties. Metal oxide deposition can cause poisoning of the engine's catalytic system, affecting the safety of motor vehicles. And it may be discharged into the atmosphere along with the exhaust gas, polluting the environment and endangering human health. It is necessary to establish an environmentally friendly and time-saving standardized method for determining the metal content in gasoline. EDXRF offers a way for qualitative analysis of trace elements in gasoline. This method could determine lead, iron and manganese simultaneously with minimal sample preparation. This standardization could provide a unified test method and conditions to obtain comparative test data.
