This technical specification provides guidelines to determine net CO2 emissions of cement products manufactured from cement plants specifically equipped with CCUS facilities. CCUS facilities in cement plants use a portion of the emitted CO2 to produce thermodynamically stable mineral carbonates, achieved through the application of mineral carbonation technology. This document applies only to CCUS activities within cement plants and does not consider CCUS facilities in other industries or the geological storage of CO2.
Compared to geological CCS, mineral carbonation technology based CCUS has certain advantages and been increasingly adopted in both voluntary and compliance carbon markets to achieve the global CO2 reduction target. This document provides net CO2 emission of cement products which have been manufactured in cement plants with CCUS facilities. It covers accurate assessment of converting the annually stored CO2 in mineral carbonation based CCUS facilities into the net CO2 emission of cement products. Although similar strategy can be applicable, it only aims to cover not other CO2 emission plants but cement plants.
