Scope

This document specifies requirements and guidelines for the planning, design, construction, renovation, operation and maintenance of school science laboratories. It covers site planning, space allocation, laboratory layouts, utilities integration, storage facilities, health and safety provisions, accessibility, environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, climate resilience, digital and smart laboratory infrastructure, waste management, and support facilities necessary for effective laboratory operation. The document applies to laboratories in primary schools, secondary schools, vocational institutions, technical colleges and university teaching laboratories.

This document does not specify technical performance requirements for laboratory equipment, analytical instruments, testing procedures, laboratory personnel competence, laboratory accreditation, or laboratory testing activities that are covered by other ISO technical committees.

Purpose

School science laboratories are essential for providing hands-on learning experiences that bridge theoretical concepts and practical application, forming the foundation for future scientists, engineers, healthcare professionals, and technical specialists. While many countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions, are investing significantly in STEM education, challenges remain regarding inadequate laboratory infrastructure, inconsistent safety practices, limited accessibility, poor maintenance, environmental performance, and the absence of harmonized international guidance. Currently, there is no internationally recognized framework that comprehensively addresses the planning, design, safety, accessibility, sustainability, resilience, and operation of school science laboratories. The absence of such guidance has resulted in significant variability in laboratory layouts, safety provisions, resource efficiency, accessibility, and overall functionality. This proposed Technical Specification (TS) supports the objectives of ISO/TC 336 by establishing internationally harmonized requirements and guidance for the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of safe, functional, sustainable, energy-efficient, and climate-resilient school science laboratories. It will promote user health, safety and wellbeing, improve educational outcomes, support equitable access to quality practical science education, facilitate international best practices while allowing adaptation to national educational systems, and contribute to strengthening STEM education, laboratory infrastructure, and sustainable development objectives worldwide.
