Scope

To produce a new ISO standard for the quantitative analysis of human lung tissue samples for asbestos fibres by transmission electron microscopy. This will include the sample preparation, the analysis by analytical transmission electron microscopy (including selected area electron diffraction and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy) and the calculation and reporting of a final result. This standard will be applicable to human lung tissue samples which have been fixed by commonly-used methods (including paraffin, formalin or alcohol), or to unfixed human lung tissue samples.

Purpose

Analysis of human lung tissue for asbestos fibres by electron microscopy is currently carried out in many countries by a variety of methods. Many of these methods share a number of common features, but some differences. Production of a standardized method would allow production of more consistent data across different countries, thereby allowing more meaningful conclusions to be drawn and for collaborative studies to be more effectively carried out. It would also provide a valuable source of information for organisations who wish to learn how to carry out this analysis effectively.
