This document specifies methods for the qualitative identification and quantitative analysis of plastics and related materials using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. It primarily covers two testing techniques: Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) FTIR spectroscopy and Transmission FTIR spectroscopy.
This document is applicable to the qualitative identification of solid, film, and powder-form plastic materials, as well as the quantitative determination of polymer matrix or specific additive contents in plastics.
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used technique for plastic material identification and analysis, supporting quality control, recycling, and regulatory compliance in the plastics industry. With the increasing global emphasis on circular economy and sustainability, accurate identification and quantification of plastics are critical for waste management, product safety, and environmental protection. However, current practices vary across industries, leading to inconsistencies in results. This standard aims to harmonize ATR-FTIR and transmission FTIR methods, ensuring reliable and comparable data.
The standard addresses key industry needs, such as:
- Enabling rapid qualitative identification of unknown plastics, which is essential for recycling streams and counterfeit detection.
- Facilitating quantitative analysis of polymer composition or additives, crucial for material specification and compliance with international regulations (e.g., REACH, food contact materials).
