Scope

This document specifies the minimum information to be included in the product specifications of time varying (4D) 3D scanners, that is, scanners that capture the geometry and attributes of objects that change shape or position over time, as a time sequence of 3D models, in order to ensure consistency and to enable users to make meaningful comparisons of scanner features and performance characteristics. It further specifies the scanner parameter settings and environmental conditions to be recorded together with the scan result, in order to facilitate the interpretation, reproduction, and subsequent processing of the 3D scanned data.

This document is Part 3 of a series. Surface 3D scanning is covered by Part 1 and volumetric 3D scanning by Part 2.

Outside the scope of this document are 3D digitizing devices that use a contact probe to acquire positional data, motion capture systems that record only the trajectories of markers or joints without capturing continuous surface geometry, and safety-related requirements for 3D scanners and their processes, which are addressed by other standards.

Purpose

Time-varying (4D) 3D scanners are now widely used across digital content creation and volumetric video, motion and gait analysis, sports and biomechanics, medical dynamic imaging, and cultural performance documentation. However, manufacturers describe scanner capabilities and performance in inconsistent, non-comparable ways, and time-varying scan data is frequently delivered without the temporal, parameter and environmental metadata needed to process, compare, or reproduce it reliably. This makes it difficult for users to select an appropriate scanner and for downstream users to correctly interpret and reuse scanned sequences.

This document addresses that gap by defining, for time-varying (4D) 3D scanning, (a) the minimum information manufacturers should include in scanner product specifications, including frame rate, temporal resolution and synchronization characteristics, enabling meaningful comparison of features and performance, and (b) the scanning parameter settings and environmental conditions that should be recorded together with the scan result to facilitate its subsequent processing. It builds on the vocabulary established in ISO/IEC 25098 and complements existing 3D-scanning and time representation standards (e.g. ISO/IEC 8803, ISO 8601) without overlapping them: no existing International Standard specifies the minimum product-specification and metadata information for time varying 3D scanning.

The proposal is submitted as a Technical Specification because the field is evolving rapidly; a TS allows the committee to publish timely, implementable guidance that can be validated in practice and later developed into an International Standard. A draft working document is attached
