Scope

This document specifies the minimum information to be included in the product specifications of surface 3D scanners, that is, scanners that acquire the surface geometry and surface attributes of static objects, in order to ensure consistency and to enable users to make meaningful comparisons of scanner features and performance characteristics. It further specifies the scanner parameter settings and environmental conditions to be recorded together with the scan result, in order to facilitate the interpretation, reproduction, and subsequent processing of the 3D scanned data.

This document is Part 1 of a series. Volumetric 3D scanning is covered by Part 2 and time-varying (4D) 3D scanning by Part 3.

Outside the scope of this document are 3D digitizing devices that use a contact probe to acquire positional data, and safety-related requirements for 3D scanners and their processes, which are addressed by other standards.

Purpose

Surface 3D scanners are now widely used across manufacturing and metrology, reverse engineering, cultural-heritage documentation, construction and surveying, and digital content creation. However, manufacturers describe scanner capabilities and performance in inconsistent, non-comparable ways, and surface scan data is frequently delivered without the parameter and environmental metadata needed to process, compare, or reproduce it reliably. This makes it difficult for users to select an appropriate scanner and for downstream users to correctly interpret and reuse scanned data. This document addresses that gap by defining, for surface 3D scanning, (a) the minimum information manufacturers should include in scanner product specifications, enabling meaningful comparison of features and performance, and (b) the scanning parameter settings and environmental conditions that should be recorded together with the scan result to facilitate its subsequent processing. It builds on the vocabulary established in ISO/IEC 25098 and complements existing 3D-scanning standards (e.g. ISO/IEC 8803, ISO/IEC 16466) without overlapping them: no existing International Standard specifies the minimum product-specification and metadata information for surface 3D scanning. The proposal is submitted as a Technical Specification because the field is evolving rapidly; a TS allows the committee to publish timely, implementable guidance that can be validated in practice and later developed into an International Standard.
