Standards Development
This document establishes design guidelines for walk -in enclosures, applicable to walk-in enclosures used in outdoor non-weather-protected locations for the installation and protection of cabinets, racks and/or other electrical and electronic equipment.
Its purpose is to provide standardized guidance for the design, manufacture, selection, configuration and verification of walk-in enclosures, ensuring structural strength, environmental protection capability, thermal management performance and internal operational safety under outdoor environmental conditions. This document covers the basic structure, dimensional coordination principles, safety accessway arrangement, lifting and splicing requirements, arrangement of internal auxiliary facilities (such as li ghting, HVAC, fire protection, surveillance, etc.), environmental adaptability, test methods and safety requirements of walk -in enclosures, providing a unified technical basis for manufacturers, system integrators and users.
The rapid development of global energy infrastructure, distributed power systems, and industrial intelligence is driving innovation in the deployment models of outdoor electrical and electronic equipment. In special geographical environments such as platea us, deserts, and extremely cold regions, as well as in engineering scenarios with tight schedules and scarce infrastructure resources, traditional building -type equipment rooms face issues such as long construction periods, large land occupation, and inade quate environmental adaptability. Meanwhile, traditional outdoor cabinets are limited by their internal capacity and lack of personnel accessibility. As an integrated, integrally transportable, and rapidly deployable protective structure, the walk-in enclosure can accommodate multiple standard cabinets and equipment, while providing space for personnel entry and short-term occupancy, significantly improving equipment deployment efficiency and operational convenience.
Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive international standards specifically addressing such walk -in, fully environmentally protected outdoor enclosures, which affects technical coordination and trade efficiency in the global market. This proposal aims to develop an international standard that systematically specifies the technical requirements and design principles for walk -in enclosures, filling the gap in this field. The standard will be based on the existing outdoor enclosure standards developed by IEC/SC48D (such as the IEC 61969 series), inheriting and extending their requirements for environmental protection, mechanical structure, and safety, while introducing functional provisions and safety specifications related to personnel accessibility.
The development of this standard will help unify product design and acceptance criteria, enhance the reliability, safety, and economy of outdoor equipment deployment, and support the sustainable development and infrastructure upgrading of industries such a s electric power, telecommunications, transportation, and new energy worldwide. At present, walk-in enclosures have been widely applied in many countries, particularly in the Chinese market, providing a solid foundation and good prospects for international promotion and cooperation.
