Scope

This document specifies the evaluation methods for functions, operational characteristics, and static and dynamic performance of intelligent remote terminal units (RTUs). It also includes basic models for reliability and fault diagnosis, as well as methods for determining communication capabilities of RTUs within communication networks.

These methods are applicable to intelligent remote terminal units (RTUs) that convert one or more analog electrical signals into digital signals for communication networks (see IEC 61158 series or other relevant standards, and IEC 60381 series).

The methods described in this document are primarily intended for:

· manufacturers to determine the performance of their products;

· users or independent testing laboratories to verify equipment performance specifications.

It is recommended that manufacturers apply this document during the early stages of product development.

This document provides guidance for design review of intelligent RTUs through:

· structured checklists for hardware and software design review;

· test methods for evaluating performance, dependability, and operability under different environmental and operating conditions;

· methods for obtaining and reporting evaluation data.

Purpose

This standard establishes a comprehensive method for evaluating the performance of intelligent remote terminal units (RTU), addressing the key market demands in the global industrial automation, power systems and process control fields. This standard will provide a consistent assessment method, enabling manufacturers to verify product functionality and users to verify compliance specifications for different industrial applications worldwide.
