Scope

This document specifies normalized railway noise spectra for the evaluation and assessment of the acoustic performance of noise barriers designed to mitigate airborne railway noise.

Purpose

As the main acoustic properties of rail noise barriers, sound absorption and airborne sound insulation are frequency-dependent, there is a need to define railway noise spectra for evaluation of test results. The railway-specific spectra are needed to provide common acoustic input conditions for future acoustic performance assessment.

This document defines the basic properties of railway noise measured at the rail track side in terms of characteristic normalized railway noise spectra and provides a basis for the subsequent acoustic performance assessment.
