Scope

This document sets requirements and provides guidance for the derivation and use of atomic weights, molecular weights, and their conversion to molar masses for applications in gas analysis.

This document also provides recommended reference values for the atomic weights in general, as well as reference values for specific applications (e.g., calibration gas mixture preparation from high-purity gases, air quality, natural gas). The generally recommended values for the atomic weights are given in Annex A and the recommended values for reference atomic weights are given in Annex B.

Purpose

This document aims at harmonising the use of atomic weights across standards in gas analysis, including air quality, hydrogen and natural gas. Currently different standards have different recommendations, and sometimes even different atomic weights are used (e.g., ISO 14912 and ISO 6976). The project also supports the revision of ISO 6976 in ISO/TC 193/SC 1 Analysis of natural gas in that this working group has indicated to await guidance from ISO/TC 158 regarding this matter.
