This document gives the specifications and guidelines for the methods to be used in the odorization of natural gas, hydrogen and methane rich gases delivered through pipeline gas networks to gas applications under a safety point of view.
This document also specifies the principles for the odorization technique (including handling, storage of odorants) and the control of odorization of those gases. This document is also applicable to other gases used in gas supply such as, e.g., biomethane, hydrogen including blends, regasified liquefied natural gas or liquefied biogas, liquefied petroleum gas.
NOTE 1 The general requirements for odorants, and the physical and chemical properties of commonly used odorants are specified in ISO 13734.
ISO TS 16922:2022 'Odorisation' is subject to revision by ISO/TC 193 Natural Gas in order to extend the scope and content to hydrogen odorisation and to the consequences of retrofitted systems on odorisation. With view to the significance of odorisation as safety measure in European gas systems and the intended use of odorisation in hydrogen grids, the direct involvement in the revision for hydrogen is intended in a parallel process under the Vienna Agreement. With this the TS will be part of the European set of deliverables and implemented European wide.
Odorisation of gases is in the scope of CEN/TC 234.
Arguments for the revision of the ISO TS are: (taken out of ISO/TC 193 Doc N 883)
• There is a need of the market for a clear standard/specification dealing with odorization of pure hydrogen
• Regarding odorization, methods and issues are quite the same for hydrogen as for natural gas
(Note: According to ISO/TC 193, ISO/TC 197 will not address odorization of pure hydrogen according to discussions in 2024 and 2025; Whereas ISO/TC 193 does not deal with pure hydrogen, it deals with odorization.
