Scope

The project will be a revision and will aim to make the standard more comprehensive and applicable to modern industry needs. In particular the project intends to:

- Update references to align with current standards.

- Provide a clearer definition of what constitutes a penstock including the applicability of different sizes.

- Update the design, manufacturing, testing and inspection requirements to incorporate three distinct construction materials: cast iron, fabricated materials, and composite plastics.

- Align the Standard with the essential requirements of the Machinery Directive (MD).

Purpose

The existing standard, published in 2005, is considered outdated for several reasons:

- It references many standards that have since been withdrawn.

- The current definition of a penstock lacks clarity, which affects usability.

- The standard does not cover the three main types of construction materials used today: cast iron, fabricated, and composite plastics.

- The Environment Agency uses bespoke penstock sizes that are difficult to apply within the current standard framework.

Updating the standard will ensure it remains relevant, practical, and aligned with the latest industry practices and regulatory requirements. This revision will help users and regulators in the water and liquid flow sector avoid the need to consult multiple industry standards alongside BS 7775: 2005, thereby simplifying compliance and application.
