The proposed document will provide methods to conduct radioactive iodomethane tests on CBRN RPD or RN filters according to requirements specified in ISO 17420 Part 8.
The nuclear industry uses fissile uranium, one associated by-product of which is radioactive iodine. When formed in the gaseous state in the high temperature of a reactor accident, this can be dispersed widely and react with organic compounds in the building (such as paints, plastics or insulation) and form radioactive organic vapours and gases. Biological action also contributes to these products. They pose a hazard to plant workers and emergency responders. The working group responsible for CBRN RPD consulted with experts from the nuclear industry and included a filter class specifically for radiological-nuclear hazard, in recognition of this threat, in ISO TS17420 Part 8. Performance criteria and test methods were developed by a dedicated sub-group of experts and included in this specification as published.
In discussion with nuclear industry representatives, it was concluded that the use of RPD incorporating RN filters corresponds more closely with routine use in workplaces akin to RPD addressed in ISO 17420 Part 2. This typical use is not the same as emergency responder applications generally applying to CBRN RPD. Protection from general industrial chemicals in addition to RN hazards is needed for tasks associated with nuclear workplaces.
It was therefore concluded that it would be beneficial to extract the RN filter performance criteria out of the CBRN RPD document, with better positioning being a new part of ISO 17420. This corresponds with the primary regular use of RN RPD, and provides the opportunity for future establishment of a dedicated working group for RN-related requirements, which could focus on additional types of RPD needed by the nuclear industry for hazards so far not addressed.
As ISO TS 17420 Part 8 is currently being advanced from a specification to a standard, this project can be undertaken concurrently to extract relevant test to create a new document in the ISO 17420-series for the radioactive iodomethane performance requirements
