ISO/NP 16900-16 Respiratory protective devices — Methods of test and test equipment — Part 16: Determination of Permeation and Penetration

Scope

The proposed document will provide methods to conduct permeation and penetration tests with aggressive chemical agents on CBRN RPD according to requirements specified in ISO 17420 Parts 8 and 9.

Purpose

When in use by first responders or others in need of protection, CBRN RPD may be exposed to liquid droplets and vapours of aggressive and highly toxic chemical agents. These agents may be absorbed into the materials from which the RPD is constructed and permeate through, or may penetrate through interfaces between different parts of the RPD. Either would result in exposure of the wearer to the toxic agents and consequent adverse health effects, up to fatality. Performance requirements have already been established.

The subject document will provide test methods to evaluate the permeation and penetration using a realistic exposure simulation with liquid and vapour agents. The requirements cover both evaluation of assembled RPD, and where applicable, permeation through non-metallic supplied breathable gas cylinders. These test methods are already set out within ISO TS17420 Part 9 – the proposal is to move them to a document under the test methods series – ISO 16900.

Additional methods on permeation and penetration testing for combined RPD will be added for alignment with a new national standard
