The proposed document will provide methods to conduct radioactive iodomethane tests on CBRN RPD or RN filters according to requirements specified in ISO 17420 Part 8.
The nuclear industry uses fissile uranium, one associated by-product of which is radioactive iodine. When formed in the gaseous state in the high temperature of a reactor accident, this can be dispersed widely and react with organic compounds in the building (such as paints, plastics or insulation) and form radioactive organic vapours and gases. Biological action also contributes to these products. They pose a hazard to plant workers and emergency responders. The working group responsible for CBRN RPD also created a filter class specifically for radiological-nuclear hazard, in recognition of this threat. Performance criteria and test methods were developed by a dedicated sub-group of experts and included in ISO TS17420 Part 8 as published.
The component filters for both CBRN and RN RPD have requirements that will be tested with this method.
As ISO TS 17420 Part 8 is being advanced from a specification to a standard, the purpose of this project is to create a document in the ISO 16900-series for the radioactive iodomethane retention test method, in order to conform with the structure of requirements and test methods for the rest of ISO 17420
