This document specifies terms and basic concepts of headway, together with parameters to calculate headway and verification for headway calculation for railway timetabling
The purpose of this document is to help many railway-related organizations around the world, regardless of their experience, to calculate accurate headway between consecutive train at positions where the passing or stopping time is recorded, helping to improve the punctuality of railways around the world.
Improving railway punctuality can increase the competitiveness of railway transport against other modes of transport such as planes, buses, and cars. More customers using railway means more income for infrastructure managers, railway operators and related organizations. It also means promotion of national economic growth, increased social efficiency, and use of environmentally friendly energy leading to increased global sustainability. Overall, increased use of railway leads to an improvement of Quality of Life (QoL) for customers.
This document specifies terms related to headway calculation and summarizes the parameters for the appropriate headway calculation when setting up daily timetables, seasonal timetables, yearly timetables, strategic timetables for long-time perspective, and other timetables of a railway. Infrastructure managers, railway operators and related organizations should be able to utilize this document, regardless of experience level, as a basis to calculate headway.
