Scope

This document describes two methods to calculate explosion characteristics and other thermodynamic properties of explosives for blasting, boosters and explosive substances. Two models are considered:

- Constant-volume explosion;

- Chapman-Jouguet detonation state (CJ state).

NOTE This document does not apply to black powder.

Purpose

The EN 13631-15:2005 standard is a harmonised standard in support of Directive 93/15/EEC (repealed by Directive 2014/28/EU).

The revision of the EN 13631-15 standard was foreseen in the Standardisation Request (SR) M/562 (see table 2 annex I) from the EC. The SR was given to CEN (CEN/TC 321) to revise all standards listed in the SR.

The work carried out by CEN/TC 321 showed that the EN 13631-15 would not directly support an essential safety requirement of Directive 2014/28/EU and therefore it would not be a candidate for harmonisation in the frame of the SR.

However, as the content of EN 13631-15 provides valuable technical information for the manufacturer and the final users of the explosive for civil uses, it is advisable to offer a revised version of EN 13631-15:2005 in line with the reference of Directive 2014/28/EU and the other parts of the EN 13631 series.

The revision of EN 13631-15 proposed keeps the contents of the 2005 version and gives in addition an alternative method of calculus to consider the technical progress.
