Scope

This document specifies specific requirements for the performance and testing of respiratory protective devices (RPD) in accordance with their classification and for use by children to protect from particles in hazardous atmospheres and/or environments.

The requirements are based on human factors and are for the complete respiratory systems. Requirements for marking and information supplied by the RPD manufacturer are included. Requirements for ensuring the fit capability of RPD on developing, e.g. growing faces are also included.

Purpose

In addition to protection of workers in the workplace, not only the COVID19 pandemic has shown that the respiratory protection should also address the specific needs of children.

This proposal is a result of the workshop conducted by ISO TC 94 SC 15 in cooperation with the FACE UP consortium on 18th September 2025, and this article in the Journal of the International Society for Respiratory Protection JISRP:

Developing Regulatory Framework and Performance Criteria for Children's Respiratory Protective Devices – a White Paper Jonathan Szalajda, Jessica TredinnickHiggins, Margaret Sietsema, Claire J. Horwell, Stephanie Holm, Stephanie Lynch, Simon Smith, Caroline Johnson JISRP Vol. 42 No. 2 2025 pp 73-100 link

The need for a comprehensive approach to paediatric RPDs is increasingly evident. This New Work Item Proposal is intended to address performance requirements inside the standardized global framework of ISO TC 94 SC 15. It is intended to be a part of the following standards / guidance system, which is under development:

• this performance standard including fit assessments,

• human factors for children,

• selection and use guidance.

It was concluded that it would be beneficial to address the aspects of performance requirements for children’s protection in a new part of the ISO 17420 series.
