Scope

This document specifies requirements and recommendations for transport service providers regarding both refrigerated vehicles— including their components such as insulated bodies and refrigeration units— and their operation in cold chain logistics services, with the aim of maintaining product quality and reducing environmental impact.

Purpose

In recent years, with the diversification and globalization of dietary habits, the importance of the food supply chain has been increasingly recognized, and attention has also been drawn to the value of the cold chain as one of its essential elements.

The quality improvements achieved by the cold chain are expected to further increase in value through the standardization of its operation.

On the other hand, there is still a lack of awareness and knowledge regarding the equipment that constitutes the cold chain, as well as its operation and management. Improper use of these can lead to adverse environmental impacts, such as excessive consumption of fossil fuels and increased food waste, thereby resulting in outcomes contrary to the original purpose. In some cases, there is even a risk that the cold chain itself may become ineffective in practice.

In particular, in the land transportation segment, which connects production, storage, and consumption, economic efficiency is often prioritized, and there is considerable variation in perspectives on quality and environmental considerations.

As the operation of the cold chain becomes standardized and its understanding and dissemination advance, the roles of the equipment that constitute it will attract increasing attention and become ever more important in the future.

Refrigerated vehicles are widely used as a means of transportation, and maintaining product quality during transport provides value and builds trust between consignors and recipients. Achieving this requires energy and is closely related to the natural environment.

This standard aims to maintain and improve product quality during transport while reducing environmental impact.
