Scope

This part of BS 5306 gives guidance on the selection, use and application of automatic water sprinkler, water spray, water mist, gaseous, foam, condensed aerosol, wet chemical and powder firefighting systems and oxygen reduction systems. It also gives guidance on installed equipment for fire and rescue service use, and on portable fire extinguishers.

This part of BS 5306 does not cover firefighting systems for the following applications:

• use on ships, in aircraft, on vehicles and mobile fire appliances;

• use below ground in the mining industry;

• explosion suppression systems.

Purpose

Proposals for changes include:

Updating references to current British, European and International Standards

Comprehensive review of guidance to all methods of fire suppression including technology neutrality where appropriate. 

Recognition of emerging fire risks (eg lithium-ion battery fires; e-bike and e-scooter storage;)

Environmental sustainability

Expanded guidance on additive-enhanced water systems

Revision of terminology and definitions

Updating system selection methodology

Updating application tables

Modernising Method A (simplified, risk-based selection method) and

Method B (bespoke selection and design route)
