Scope

Wheelchair seating assessment is an evaluation of a person and an individual’s environment that includes gathering subjective and objective data for the purposes of selecting the most appropriate wheelchair seating, and positioning accessories, to support or improve wellbeing, function, and mobility of the wheelchair occupant.

This document outlines components of a minimum data set for wheelchair seating assessment obtained by gathering subjective and objective data from and of the occupant, and directs the reader to comprehensive assessment tools and resources available, including specialty ones.

This document covers the assessment processes related to the selection and prescription of seating components, including seat cushions, back supports, head supports, and other postural support devices that meet the occupant’s tissue integrity, positioning, and functionality needs.

This document does not cover the assessment for, nor the selection of, the wheelchair base to, or of. which the seating system is a component, though it is acknowledged that seating is not likely to be used independently from the wheelchair frame with which it is interfaced.

Purpose

Why this initiative exists:

- Seating Assessment is currently not a standardized approach to wheelchair and wheelchair seating provision around the world

- Seating Assessment is not part of curriculum in majority of the educational programmes preparing healthcare professionals expected to prescribe seating

- Seating Assessment is missing from the list of competencies for Occupational Therapists and physiotherapists in the majority of jurisdictions

- Since ISO is an international undertaking, an ISO Seating Assessment standard will serve as a guiding document for entities looking to develop wheelchair seating standards or to incorporate this document into their programmes, frameworks, etc.

The goal of this document is to provide information and resources, not to be prescriptive or limiting:

- It is a comprehensive yet concise document with the latest evidence-based resources, and examples of assessment tools listed in the Appendices.

- It summarises what is known about seating assessment, and aligns (where applicable) with the language, approaches, and terminology of other relevant ISO documents and world-accepted guidelines and positions (RESNA, WHO, etc.)

- The rationale for each component of the assessment is explained, so that even a person without specialty in seating will be able to understand why some things have to be done: describing how assessment findings are linked to selecting certain attributes of a wheelchair seating system is essential.
