Scope

This document specifies the parameters for a communication system between a vehicle and a Child Restraint System (CRS).

The parameters are meant to be general and apply to different communication systems. This document does not specify the electrical connection between the vehicle and the CRS.

Purpose

The purpose of this proposed standard is to establish a unified framework for the Interface System Between Vehicle and Child Restraint System (CRS), enabling consistent, safe, and interoperable communication between vehicles and child safety systems.

The justification for this standard arises from the increasing integration of electronic systems in vehicles and the growing need to enhance child safety through intelligent monitoring and interaction. Currently, there is no harmonized approach to ensure compatibility and data exchange between vehicles and child restraint systems, leading to fragmentation in design, reduced safety potential, and limited scalability across manufacturers.

By defining clear technical and functional requirements, this standard aims to:

Improve child safety through real-time monitoring and alerts.

Facilitate interoperability between different vehicle brands and CRS models.

Promote industry-wide adoption of smart safety solutions.

This initiative aims to respond to a gap in existing standards and aligns with global efforts to enhance vehicle safety and child protection.

The scope is limited to communication parameters and doesn’t cover topics outside the scope of SC31.
