Scope

This document specifies general inspection and test requirements for refrigerated independent type C liquid ammonia fuel tanks on ships. It ensures that the required condition for ammonia fuel storage is clearly stated as being maintained in a refrigerated state at atmospheric pressure.

Purpose

Ammonia is recognized one of the effective alternative fuels in achieving the International Maritime Organization's (IMO’s) 2050 net zero carbon emission goal. Ammonia is expected to constitute the largest share of global shipping energy consumption by around 2050.

Ammonia is convenient to store and transport and can be produced on a large scale. And it has a high cost-benefit advantage with production costs around 32% lower than liquefied hydrogen. On the other hand, due to its toxicity, ammonia requires special safety requirements in handling. It can also cause Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) due to its corrosive properties and may emit fine particulate matter into the atmosphere in case of improper operation.

Ammonia fuelled engines are being developed. In order to use ammonia as ship fuel, it is necessary to develop technologies that can eliminate risks, as well as inspection criteria and operational procedures. However, guidelines and standards for fabrication and inspection of pressurized independent type C liquefied ammonia fuel tanks are not developed yet. This proposal sets up general test and inspection requirements for the pressurized independent ammonia fuel tanks of type C. It is expected that useful information can be provided to marine industry such as ship owners, classification societies, shipyards, etc. Finally, this document would contribute to the growth of relevant industries and benefit all related stakeholders.
