ISO/NP 26875-1 Railway applications — Water supply and hygiene equipment for rolling stock — Part 1: General vocabulary

Scope

VThis document is applicable to railway vehicles and specifies the terms, definitions, symbols and abbreviated terms to be used in this standards series, water supply and hygiene equipment for rolling stock.

Purpose

1. Overview of international applications

Water supply and hygiene equipment for rolling stock comprise water supply equipment, toilet, washroom and waste collecting device, etc. These are essential service facilities on the trains. Currently, technologies and products related to water supply and hygiene equipment have been widely adopted and are well-established in railway vehicles globally. Driven by technological advances, increasing demands for passenger comfort, and the worldwide emphasis on green and low-carbon solutions, water supply and hygiene equipment for rolling stock continue to evolve. For instance, in Electric Multiple Units (EMUs), zero grey water discharge has been achieved—where wastewater from sinks, galleys, and similar sources is collected and treated onboard, thereby enhancing the environmental sustainability of railway operations.

2.Current status of international standards

At present, there is no ISO or UIC standard for vocabulary of ‘Water supply and hygiene equipment’ and no unified regulation has been established. Relevant international standards have different expression for some major components, there is a lack of clear definition for some major components such as washroom, fresh water tank, water filling coupling, waste retention tank, etc.

The vocabulary is the foundation for technical communication and cooperation in water supply and hygiene equipment engineering, to establish an ISO standard for vocabulary is necessary and can minimize:

- Misunderstanding globally.

- Translation effort and errors arising from the translation process.

- Effort and time related to terms and definitions during new standard preparation or revision.

3.Project proposal

Given the current absence of a comprehensive ISO standard for water supply and hygiene equipment for the rolling stock, it is necessary to develop specific standards and establish general technical specifications. This initiative should encompass standardized terminology and definitions for water supply and hygiene equipment, thereby supplementing and unifying the technical parameters of critical components. Such standardization would facilitate interoperability, enhance safety and reliability, and support the global advancement of sustainable rail transport systems.

The proposed ISO standard“Railway applications-Water supply and hygiene equipment for rolling stock” is recommended to be divided into four parts, including Part 1-General vocabulary, Part 2-Waste water discharge equipment, Part 3-Water restocking equipment, and Part 4-Hygiene requirement.
