The scope of this revision is to update EN 809 by defining the common safety requirements for pumps and pump units for fluids in accordance with the current state of the art and the applicable European regulatory framework (e.g. Machinery Regulation EU 2023/1230, CRA (EU) 2024/2847,…). The work includes the clarification, enhancement and restructuring of existing requirements, based on industry feedback and the results of the gap analysis, which demonstrate that several provisions of the previous edition are outdated, imprecise or no longer aligned with today’s normative language.
The revised scope covers all significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazard related events relevant to the design, construction, integration and intended use of pumps and pump units. This includes mechanical, thermal and functional safety aspects, noise and vibration, foreseeable misuse, as well as requirements related to integrity, documentation and protection against corruption of technical information.
Where pumps incorporate connected monitoring, diagnostic or control functions, the revision will ensure consistency with the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and other horizontal standards addressing digital reliability and system integrity.
The scope further includes the harmonization of terminology, the alignment with current EN ISO 12100 and other relevant horizontal safety standards, and the removal of outdated formulations to achieve a clear, contemporary and fully coherent standard structure.
The revision of EN 809 is required to update the standard in line with the state of the art, current safety technologies and the new European regulatory framework, including the Machinery Regulation. Feedback from industry and test bodies indicates that several requirements in the existing edition lack clarity or no longer reflect current practice, particularly regarding risk assessment, safeguarding measures, noise and vibration aspects, and integrated monitoring functions. Updating the standard will improve consistency with horizontal safety standards, enhance clarity and practical applicability, and ensure a harmonized level of safety for pumps and pump units within Europe.
