Standards Development
This British Standard will provide guidance on the measurement, assessment and monitoring of soil carbon to support soil carbon sequestration and sustainable soil management. It will address the identification and quantification of different forms of soil carbon (including organic and inorganic fractions), the establishment of baseline conditions, the potential for enhancement and the tracking of changes in soil carbon over time using appropriate measurement, modelling and verification approaches. The standard will review and align existing methodologies and emerging techniques, enabling consistent and comparable practices across applications such as land management and carbon markets.
The purpose of this standard is to improve confidence, consistency and transparency in the measurement and reporting of soil carbon, thereby supporting the development of credible soil carbon sequestration activities and markets. By providing agreed best practices, it aims to enable farmers, landowners and other stakeholders to assess and manage soil carbon effectively, contribute to climate change mitigation, and enhance soil health and ecosystem services, while addressing current inconsistencies in monitoring, reporting and verification approaches.
