Scope

This proposed standard specifies the terms and definitions, test requirements and methods, annual performance rating method, test tolerances and marking provisions of condensing units for cold storage applications.

Purpose

With the increasing demand for imported food and the more stringent requirements for food preservation, it has led to the accelerated construction of small and medium-sized cold storage around the world. As an important part of the cold storage refrigeration system, the market demand for condensing units continues to grow. According to GCCA Global Cold Storage Capacity Report, global cold storage capacity reaches 946 million cubic meters in 2023, and there is an increase of approximately 53% compared to 2018. According to the latest JARN Global Refrigeration Market Report, the global condensing unit market value has reached US$14 billion in 2024, accounting for 26.8% of the commercial refrigeration equipment market value. At the same time, with the continuous deepening of the international practice of energy conservation, environmental protection and other social sustainable development themes, the refrigeration industry is also facing development requirements for energy conservation and emission reduction.

On the global market, unit coolers and condensing units are often purchased and sold separately, and condensing unit is an important part of the cold storage refrigeration system, so formulating a separate performance evaluation standard for condensing units is in line with current market demand. There are performance evaluation standards for condensing units in the EU, the US, China and Mexico, but there is no relevant ISO standard. ISO, as a global authoritative standardization organization, formulating this standard will help guide the orderly market development of the packaged refrigeration units, achieve the goal of energy saving and emission reduction, guarantee the performance and reliability of product development, promote the optimization and upgrading of the product and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of consumers.

Based on the above considerations, we propose to develop the performance testing and rating standard of the condensing units for cold storage applications.
