This part of IEC 62321 specifies one normative extraction and measurement technique for determination of benzotriazole ultraviolet absorbers ((2 -(2'-Hydroxy-3',5'-di-tert-butylphenyl) benzotriazole(UV-320), 2-(5-Chloro-2-Benzotriazolyl)-6-Tert-Butyl-p-Cresol(UV-326),2-(3,5-Di- Tert-Butyl-2-Hydroxyphenyl)-5-Chlorobenzotriazole(UV-327), 2-(2H-Benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6- ditertpentylphenol(UV-328), Octrizole(UV-329), 2-(benzotriazol-2-yl)-6-butan-2-yl-4-tert- butylphenol (UV-350)) in polymers by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method(GC-MS).
This standard specifies the qualitative and quantitative methods for the determination of benzotriazole ultraviolet absorbers in polymers by means of ultrasonic -assisted extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method (GC-MS).
Ultraviolet absorbers are used as light stabilizers in plastic materials and for other applications. By 2024, Ultraviolet absorbers UV320, UV328, UV327, UV350, UV327, and UV329 have been added to the list of highly concerned chemicals (SVHC) by the Europea n Chemicals Agency (ECHA). For the analysis of ultraviolet absorbers in electronic and electrical products, no detection method for the content of ultraviolet absorbers in electronic and electrical products has been found. Therefore, a standard needs to be established.
In May 2023, at the IEC/TC 111/WG3 meeting, four types of benzotriazole UV absorbers, UV -320, UV-327, UV-328, and UV-350, were proposed as candidate substances for future testing methods.
Subsequently, the PWI standard was discussed at the WG 3 meeting held in Singapore in 2024. Finally, at the 2024 IEC/TC 111 Plenary, based on Decision 22/03 (TC 111 agrees to establish PWI in WG 3 regarding the testing methods for benzotriazole ultraviolet absorbers proposed by CN NC.), work on PWI 111-2 (UV-test) was successfully completed over a one-year period.
At the joint meeting of WG 3 and JWG 14 held in New Delhi, India in 2025, it was discussed whether to proceed with the PWI 111-2 (UV-test) as an ISO/IEC double logo standard. It was agreed to report on the progress of the final PWI 111-2 (UV-test) at the ISO/TC 61/SC 5 Plenary.
At the ISO/TC 61/SC 5/WG 11 meeting and SC 5 plenary held in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2025, it was reported in the ISO/TC 61 plenary report that JWG 14 would develop the PWI 111 -2 (UV-test) standard as an ISO/IEC double logo standard.
In particular, ISO/TC 61/SC 5 will proceed with the development of the double logo standard awaiting the NP result from IEC/TC 111.
Therefore, China NC has decided to establish a new testing method for UV absorbers in IEC/TC 111/JWG 14 for the ISO/IEC double logo standard with ISO/TC 61/SC 5.
