Scope

This document specifies the equipments and procedures for the verification of test specimen radii. It is applicable to test specimens described in ISO 20753 but can also be used for other test specimens, and to radius typically in the range r >= 0.10mm.

Purpose

The dimensional accuracy of plastic test specimens directly determines the reliability of fundamental material property test results. This is especially critical in notched impact tests, where the notch tip radius serves as a key parameter—any deviation in its dimensions can significantly undermine the accuracy and comparability of test data. Although current international and other frequently used standards—such as tensile testing standards including ISO 527-2, ASTM D638, and impact testing standards such as ISO 179, ASTM D256—specify requirements and tolerances for specimen radius dimensions, a globally unified and standardized methodology for verifying plastic specimen radii has yet to be established worldwide.
