Scope

This document specifies the requirements for medium tolerance sling chains of grade 10X for the use primarily in chain slings, assuming a nominal stress of 1 000 N/mm2 related to the cross-sectional area of both legs for the respective nominal diameter at the specified minimum breaking force. The range for the nominal diameter extends from 4 to 32 mm. Sling chains according to this document are electrically welded, round steel short link chains with a nominal pitch pn = 3 × dn, heat treated and tested. Permissible welding processes are flash welding, resistance butt welding and friction welding. These sling chains are designed for use in a temperature range from -40 °C to +380 °C. The sling chains are generally surface painted by the manufacturer for easy identification and corrosion protection. At the customer's request, the surface condition is non-coated. Both characterise the finished condition. NOTE The term in the title "extended use" implies the following differentiation criteria in relation to the sling chain 10X: - Extension of the operating temperature range from -40 °C up to +380 °C - The higher level of impact energy means greater resistance to unexpected shock loads - A qualified evidence of relative resistance to stress corrosion cracking

Purpose

This proposal specifies technical requirements for medium-tolerance grade 10X sling chains intended primarily for chain slings with extended use characteristics. It defines uniform mechanical and manufacturing requirements based on a nominal stress for nominal diameters from 4mm to 32mm. The sling chains are round steel short-link chains, electrically welded using established welding processes, heat treated, and tested to achieve consistent quality. The specified design, manufacturing methods, and testing requirements support reliable performance under typical lifting conditions. The proposal also defines the applicable temperature range and addresses surface conditions for identification and corrosion protection. Overall, the document provides a clear and harmonised technical basis for the manufacture and use of grade 10X sling chains in lifting applications.
