This document recommends characteristics, test methods and minimum performance specifications for unused textile for the healthcare and social service facilities (hospitals, residential care homes, etc.) to give guidance on the suitability of products intended to be maintained by industrial laundering.
This document is not applicable to surgical textiles under the Medical Devices Directive nor protective clothing under the PPE Directive.
General
This technical specification defines requirements for textiles procured by healthcare institutions and social care facilities, which are laundered either in industrial laundries or in inhouse facilities equipped with washing equipment.
The requirements are intended to ensure adequate durability of textile products under conditions of industrial laundering or laundering approximating such conditions. While certain textile materials are capable of withstanding more than 100 washing cycles, this technical specification addresses less demanding conditions and, consequently, more costeffective materials. It aims to identify textile materials suitable for repeated use under industrial laundering conditions. This approach contributes to sustainability objectives in environments where products are exposed to biocontamination and where singleuse products are frequently used as an alternative.
Proposed revision
Two principal changes to this technical specification are proposed.
Firstly, the specification shall better reflect the practices of energy and environmentally efficient industrial laundries. To this end, a washing test using an industrial washing machine in accordance with EN ISO 15797 shall be introduced.
Secondly, the washing test using a domestic washing machine in accordance with EN ISO 6330 shall be retained as an alternative for very small healthcare and social care facilities. In such cases, washing programmes shall be specified so as to simulate industrial laundering conditions as closely as possible.
Extension of product groups
Based on experience gained from the application of this technical specification, it is proposed to include additional product groups.
Cloth diapers shall be added to Table 10, together with limit values derived from practical application of the specification.
In addition, a new table 11, provisionally entitled “Others”, shall be introduced to specify requirements for products made of fleece, etc.
Further product groups may be included where limit values have been established that characterise their suitability for repeated use under industrial laundering conditions.
