Scope

This document is applicable to laboratory bench support structures in biology, chemistry and physics laboratories where research, preparative, analytical, process activities take place and which can involve work with hazardous substances, including higher education (college and university teaching and post-graduate research).

This document does not cover the requirements of schools, i.e. pre college/pre-university (refer to EN 13150), or highly specialist laboratories which need very specific, bespoke solutions to enable them to function.

This document specifies requirements for installation, design and testing procedures of laboratory bench support structures that either have a fixed installation or are mobile. The requirements apply both to free-standing structures that are fully assembled and ready for operation as well as to the support structures of benches that are used as part of a combined assembly.

Purpose

Extension of EN 14056 to a standard series on laboratory furniture, specifically laboratory bench systems.
