Scope

The proposed standard provides requirements and guidance for the design of wind turbine pitch bearings across relevant rolling element bearing types.

The proposed standard also includes requirements and guidance for the engineering of bolted and pitch connections and lubrication associated with pitch bearings.

Furthermore, requirements and guidance for design verification, validation, and considerations related to manufacturing and quality assurance of pitch bearings are specified.

Purpose

There is currently no international standard dedicated to the design and verification of pitch bearings for wind turbines.

The Design Guideline 03 (DG03) update in 2024 introduced significant advancements in pitch bearing engineering, and there is a clear need to formalize this progress in an IEC standard.

In addition, the development of IEC 61400 -4 on wind turbine gearboxes showed standardization improvements that are equally relevant for pitch bearings.

Establishing this standard will support harmonized design requirements and improve certification.
