Standards Development
This standard gives recommendations and guidance for unreinforced earthworks forming part of general civil engineering construction, with the exception of dams.
This standard also gives recommendations and guidance for temporary excavations such as trenches and pits.
NOTE Reinforced earthworks are covered in BS 8006-1 and BS 8006-2. This document applies to earthworks classified as Geotechnical Category 1, 2 and 3 structures as defined in BS EN 1997-1:2004.
As a result of the publication of the following items the document requires significant updating to reflect these changes.
• latest Eurocodes for geotechnics EN1997 parts 1 to 3 and the major revision to the
• National Highways(NH) standards, deletion of series 600 for earthworks and the introduction of CD601 and CC601 for earthworks.
• Publication of BS EN 16907 parts 1 to 6 and ongoing works relating to sustainability within CEN TC396
The intention is also to refer to the contents of other documents that have been withdrawn by National Highways but are still relevant for good practice in earthworks.
