Appropriately capturing these transformations are important to industry, governments and other stakeholders. Consistent terminology for describing innovations in materials and technologies is important for facilitating trade, commerce and for spurring further progress. The terminology within this document are frequently used in relation to nanotechnology and technology fields without clear and consistent definitions. The innovations in materials and technologies described in this document make important contributions to society and are believed to be essential for achieving future sustainability goals. In the context of increasing scientific knowledge, the purpose of this part of this document is to define important terms and concepts for describing innovations in technologies and materials in a precise and consistent manner, while clarifying their interrelationship, as well as their reationship to nanotechnologies.
