Scope

This document focuses on the unique characteristics of coal reservoirs, with particular emphasis on the detailed description of coal cores and coal cuttings, the collection and processing of coal cuttings, coal coring, and gas content testing. It is applicable to the entire process control of coalbed methane mud logging operations.

Purpose

The purpose of this proposed deliverable is to standardize mud logging techniques for coalbed methane by taking into account the specific characteristics of coal reservoirs, thereby meeting the technical requirements for efficient coalbed methane development.

Global coalbed methane resources are abundant. However, as one of the key technologies for efficient development, mud logging currently lacks a unified technical specification, which restricts large-scale coalbed methane development. Establishing a mud logging technical specification tailored to coal reservoir characteristics will enable more standardized continuous collection, analysis, recording, and interpretation of cuttings, cores, drilling fluids, gases, formation pressure, and engineering parameters during drilling operations. This will improve the accuracy and timeliness of formation profile reconstruction, hydrocarbon discovery and evaluation, and well control risk warning, while also providing detailed geological support for fast and optimal drilling, precise coring, and geosteering.

To date, China has conducted mud logging technology tests and applications on several thousand coalbed methane wells in the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin, including more than 260 horizontal wells, thereby accumulating extensive engineering practice and field experience.
