This document specifies the chemical composition limits for aluminium casting alloys and mechanical properties of separately cast test pieces for these alloys.
Annex C is included as a guide to the selection of alloys for a specific use or process.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 576, EN 1559 1, EN 1559 4, EN 1676 and EN ISO 8062 3.
In recent years there has been a trend toward using larger quantities of recycled aluminum in the production of aluminum alloys across all sectors and applications. As part of the revision of other European standards, efforts are underway to incorporate recyclable alloys or to increase the allowable impurity levels to permit the use of recycled material (see EN 573), which is valid for EN 1706 as well.
The European Commission considers aluminum a Critical Raw Material because not enough of it is produced in Europe to meet the ever-increasing market demand.
To reduce the dependence on non-EU countries for this valuable metal, as well as to reduce energy consumption and emissions, it is necessary to incentivize and promote the use of recycled aluminum available in Europe.
Given recent conflicts and the ongoing instability of global markets, the use of aluminum scrap should be considered also strategic for industrial development in Europe.
A new EU directive on end-of-life vehicles will soon come into force (in the second or third quarter of 2026), in which the Commission intends to propose a minimum content of recycled materials in vehicles.
Therefore, in the automotive industry, everyone will have to use aluminum alloys with a minimum recycled content. This development shall be reflected in the revision of EN 1706
