New Work Item Proposal - revision of EN 13203-2:2025

Comment by:

Scope

This document is applicable to gas-fired appliances producing domestic hot water. It applies to both instantaneous and storage tank appliances; waters-heaters and combination boilers that have:

— a heat input not exceeding 400 kW;

— a hot water storage tank capacity (if any) not exceeding 2 000 l.

In the case of combination boilers, with or without storage tank, domestic hot water production is integrated or coupled, the whole being marketed as a single unit.

The load profiles 3XS and XXS of the Commission Regulation (EU) No 814/2013 are not included in the present document.

Purpose

EN 13203-2 applies to instantaneous and storagetype gas appliances up to 400 kW input and 2,000 liters storage. Its purpose is to provide consistent methods for measuring energy consumption, reflecting realistic household hot water use, and sup porting regulatory compliance with EU Ecodesign and Energy Labelling requirements. The standard allows manufacturers and regulat ors to benchmark performance, optimize appliance design, and provide clear energy information to consumers. It complements relate d standards (e.g., EN 13203-1, EN 13203-7) to include indirect efficiency effects such as heat recovery.

The justification lies in the variability of energy performance across appliance types and usage patterns: without standardized load pro files and measurement methods, comparisons and regulatory enforcement would be inconsistent. EN 13203-2 ensures quantifiable, user-relevant, and comparable metrics, promoting energy efficient design, market harmonization, and informed consumer choice while supporting environmental and sustainability goals.
